In an average American year:
27,000 Americans commit suicide, a disproportionate number of which are gay teens
85,000 Americans are wounded by firearms, with 38,000 dying from the wounds (teens representing a disproportionately large number of the perpetrators and victims)
2,900,000 children are reported to be victims of serious neglect, abuse, torture or deliberate starvation; however, the vast majority of such childhood violence is never reported
950,000 school children are treated with amphetamine-type drugs for ADHD
(compiled by Dr. Gary Kohls)
OVERVIEW
This seminar draws upon the best of the Christian tradition in the fields of politics, psychology, theology, spirituality and human development. As a parent, physician, and faith-based peace and justice activist Dr. Kohls knows from experience that a comprehensive approach to diagnosis is essential to recommending a treatment. Avoiding or excluding major causal factors in America's epidemic of teen aggression, depression, violence and suicide is a major flaw in most suicide or violence prevention programs.
The basic premise for this program is that, contrary to conventional wisdom, violence and suicide are totally comprehensible and that the church of the followers of the nonviolent Jesus could have much to do and say about violence among their children, whether self-inflicted (low self esteem, depression, suicidality, risk-taking behavior, substance use and abuse) or directed at others (aggression, picking a fight, joining the military, homicidality). -- Gary Kohls, M.D.
THE GOAL of the seminar is to help concerned people of faith achieve in-depth understanding and a plan of action to address the challenges of teen depression, violence and suicide. Participants will take home valuable information on local agencies, schools and churches for the implementation of action plans.

DR. GARY KOHLS, MD

Dr. Kohls is an experienced family physician, a father and a grandfather, a student of the history of militarism and fascism, a concerned observer of the world scene and a Christian faith-based peace and justice activist who is committed to gospel nonviolence. He has special interests in 1) posttraumatic stress disorder, 2) the psychology and science of the mind-body-spirit connections, 3) neurotransmitter-related brain/mental disorders 4) countering the current, dangerous prescription drug use epidemic and 5) the practicality of Jesus' teachings of unconditional love of friends and enemies.
Dr. Kohls' holistic practice of medicine is based on understanding the connections between our toxic, violent, competitive, stressful culture and his patient's ill health and then changing the equation by rational, neuroscience-based, non-drug treatment strategies that always involve unhurried psychoeducational psychotherapy.
