Mother's Day vigils for peace The first Mother's Day was a protest against the bloodshed of the Civil War by women who lost their sons. This year, a coalition of church and human rights organizations are reclaiming it as a day for peace in Colombia, where eight members of the peace community of San Jose de Apartado were massacred in February. People across the country are taking a stand and organizing Mother's Day peace vigils through May 8 for San Jose de Apartado and other Colombian peace communities violated and threatened by violence. Church resources and petitions for government officials will be available to help you organize in your community. A list of scheduled actions, tools for vigils, sample op-eds, and more are available on the campaign Web page.
