Uniting Visions in The Great Conversation

View Archives

The first ECAPC Paxion Training Institute in Atlanta last weekend was a success by many standards, thanks to your prayers, God's grace and the spirit of the participants.

"A genuine nonviolent conflict resolution process can be a tremendous empowerment experience" says THE LEADERS MANUAL: Kingian Nonviolence: The Philosophy and Methodology by Bernard LaFayette, Jr and David C. Jehnsen (p. 35).  David Jehnsen, chair of the ECAPC board, presented elements of Martin Luther King's spiritual worldview and strategy for promoting the reign of God on earth as in heaven.  Dr. Bernard LaFayette was prevented from attending the institute as planned due to a call for nonviolence training in Nigeria, but we experienced his teaching through a powerful DVD.

Dr. James A. Noel of San Francisco Theological Seminary illuminated the historical context for ECAPC's "Great Conversation" aimed ultimately toward the reconciliation of urban and suburban, black and white, justice and historic peace churches.  His discourse on the place of slavery in the history of the American empire quickened our awareness of the African American burden of suffering and chasm of division between races in this country which must be addressed if the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to unite us today as it did Jew and Gentile two thousand years ago.

Are people today, and we might ask, especially youth, needing experiences of empowerment?  How can the self-image, sense of opportunity and hope for the future of youth, young adults and all ages be built up?

Perhaps it could come through experiences of genuine nonviolent conflict resolution--what ECAPC director Dr. Matthew Johnson is helping us to call and understand as PAXION: peace action.  Of which the great conversation addressing the dividing wall between black and white could be a central part.  And thank you, Karen Young, for managing a great event last weekend!
