Joan Haan on Behalf of ECAPC Board of Directors 4/28/2009
Joan Haan

It is with profound sadness and thanksgiving for a life well lived, that we honor Laurie Garfield, former ECAPC Board Member and active member of the Twin Cities ECAPC community. Laurie died April 22, 2009 from complications relating to pancreatic cancer. A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church , St. Paul , Wednesday, April 29, 11:00 a.m. See full notice found in the journal link below.

I knew Laurie as a member of my congregation, Pilgrim Lutheran, and as co-founder of Pilgrim’s for Just Peace.  She and husband Rod Olsen, were role models and the “pilgrim” activists for peace and justice in our congregation as well as leaders in the Twin Cities Every Church a Peace Church community. When she retired from the ECAPC Board in 2007 to more actively involve herself  as consociate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and The Peace House, she recruited me to take her place – passing the torch to another pale skinned Lutheran female!

What I loved about Laurie was her down-to-earth gracious personality and humor. She was witty and wise, welcoming and simply wonderful to work and be with. She mentored my daughter Liz as volunteer at the Peace House.  I will always be grateful to Laurie for adoring my daughter and taking her under her wing.

Laurie was a peacemaker with a heart. Thank you, Laurie for your inspiration. You will live on in ECAPC and in the hearts of many. Your Input Needed for ECAPC Board Now! 5/9/2007
Dick Davis
Letter from Board Chair, Dick Davis regarding ECAPC Vision

Greetings in the wonderful name of Jesus Christ!  This letter is to inform you of the many exciting changes taking place at ECAPC.

In March, the ECAPC Board of Directors and Staff met at Dayspring in Washington D.C. where we continued our development of a three year strategic and long-term plan.
The Board, under the leadership of our new National Director, Diane Ford Jones is discerning a vision for ECAPC which combines our peacemaking efforts with a pragmatic justice orientation so that ECAPC can be positioned to unite both peace and justice movements under one umbrella. Diane proposed a vigorous staffing and regional volunteer program and articulated a vision that brings together the many ECAPC elements into a harmonious whole. Diane will work closely with the ECAPC staff as they implement the vision of the Board.

Over the next week or so we would like your input on two vision statements and proposed short and long term goals (abbreviated below*) that the Board has developed.  We will use this in anticipation of our finalizing these statements into one comprehensive plan.  Ours is a grassroots movement. Your input will help us give shape to this important document and we will live into it together in the not too distant future.  So, please take a moment.  Share your thoughts and express your hopes. We simply cannot adequately achieve success in our overarching goal to promote peace with justice in the world without your participation.  The Board will reconvene in mid May to complete its work and we will be sure to share the results of our discernment with you.

Vision Statements for Your Input:*
We are a Christian organization that provides inspirational and educational resources to fulfill Jesus’ mission of love, social justice and non-violence.
ECAPC changes the way Christians view Christianity through the mission and practice of nonviolence with justice.

Goals for Your Input:*
  1. Increase size and diversity of board to 15 by Dec 31, 2007
  2. Accomplish all provisions of Shumaker grant with integrity and in a timely way.
  3. Grow church registry by 100% each year for 3 years
  4. Manage and acquire resources, increasing amount of income from new sources to :
    1. $  60,000 in 2007
    2. $100,000 in 2008
    3. $150,000 in 2009
  5. Provide education, develop communication and strengthen ecumenical partnerships
  6. Define our biblical and theological foundation

Please send your input via email to:  Dick Davis at dick@peacemennonite.org

Also, if you haven't done so already, we also ask you to go to the website and sign onto the National Peace Registry.  Let your allegiance to peace with justice be known.

May the Peace of Jesus be with you in all your endeavors,
Dick Davis, ECAPC Board Chair
