Two weeks ago I wrote: Jesus said to his disciples as he sent them out, "When you enter a house, say 'Peace to this house.' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person, but if not it will return to you."
This process requires at least three things:
1) The belief that there could be a person of peace in the house.
2) A way to recognize a person of peace, to see them when they're there.
3) An appropriate response.
Today a few thoughts on ways to recognize a person of peace. I'm suggesting that we try to notice if people have taken small first steps to be people of peace. Some are obvious, others maybe not so.
Do they welcome a person coming with a message of peace and peacemaking?
Do they show signs of loving their children, family, neighbors, others, themselves?
Do they seem to understand that the world is not all right as it is, needs to change and perhaps could?
These small steps, evident in people's lives, might locate for us more people of peace than we expected!

Last week I suggested three elements of recognizing persons of peace when we enter a house carrying the gospel of peace. The first is to believe that there could be a person of peace in the house.

It is virtually meaningless to speak of peace without a commitment to rid our culture and the world of the rapacious, exploitative spirit that has inspired a cruel and sustained negligence of a world and nature that we all share. I recently gave an interview that some of you may have listened to thanks to the good graces of our brother John Stoner in which I stated in essence that America’s past is not only a part of our present but indeed is essential to overcoming our present spiritual crisis reflected in the symptomatic expression of pervasive violence. In his commentary last Saturday Matthew Johnson reflected on Jesus' Great Invitation: "Come unto me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11). In an eloquent, soaring statement he says we do not easily understand either the reality of the oppressed nor the meaning of the invitation for ourselves. I think (just my opinion) that Matthew connected this commentary with the radio talk show in which he participated, from Oakland, CA, addressing "violence in America." Matthew shared the link to that talk show. I want to take that further, and urge you to click on that conversation and think about it.

The suffering of Christ reminds us that humanity has a long history of violence perpetuated through institutions, group animosities and interpersonal hostilities. Christ’s passion reminds us that the vulnerable, the poor, the exposed and the good are more often subjected to the worst of it. Yet Jesus clearly demonstrates that the violent inflection on human history is not the will of God. He shows us that it need not be the way it is however “natural” it seems to some. Through his Passion he offered us a more excellent way. We are to affirm the goodness of a loving God in the midst of this world’s violence. We are to affirm the presence of a countervailing power with an endurance that in its very appearance through us attests to the reality of a living and loving God.
It is in the histories of the oppressed that we most clearly, though not of course exclusively, see both the malady as well as the cure for the pathology of abusive power. America as a national community must come to terms with its ongoing reliance on its own legacy of violence if we are to ever approach, as a National grouping the, Beloved Community. The book, The Passion of the Lord: African American Reflections edited by Dr. James Noel of San Francisco Theological Seminary and Dr. Matthew V. Johnson of ECAPC written in part as a response to the discussion around Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Lord is a good place to start rethinking this enduring reality and its theological significance.
Lets us renew our commitment through our own protracted passion to a non-violent future of justice and peace by deepening our appreciation of our own violent pass. Let us celebrate our Lord’s resurrection as the promise of our own ultimate triumph.
A Friend of the Crucified,
Rev. Matthew V. Johnson, Sr. Ph. D
National Executive Director of ECAPC

It is a remarkable moment. The election of Barak Obama is not, however, the end of our struggle; nor is it yet the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning. It is time for the struggle for justice and true democracy to mature and the mission of the church in the modern world to come of age. The work which Jesus did, which his disciples were to continue, was first the work of telling the truth. That was a work which, among other things, was disturbing--to people, to the status quo, to the powers who thought themselves rulers and shepherds of the people.
The work of Jesus was a work of resistance, which took him ultimately to the cross.

And Jesus says, “have you been with me all this time, and you still haven’t seen God, you’re not beginning to understand God’s way; the way God is replacing that old strategy of holocaust, of flood, to kill all the evildoers?”

In August 2003, a few months after the US occupation of Iraq began, I joined with several co-workers to visit Kabala, Najef, and other areas of Southern Shiite Iraq. Our interaction with other visitors that day was instructive. When we finally went our separate ways, my heart was pounding. We, children of the Great Satan, had just had an enormously relaxing conversation with citizens whose nation had recently been called part of the Axis of Evil by the US President. And, the conversation occurred in a Holy Place.
